Merima Ključo and Jelena Milušić released their second joint album La Convivencia: Hommage to Flory Jagoda in mid-September.
The album consists of 2 cycles of songs by Merima Ključo inspired by the Sephardic tradition. The first cycle "Homage to Flory Jagoda" contains Ključo's arrangements of 5 songs composed by Flory Jagoda, while the remaining 5 are selections from the cycle "VII Sephardic Songs," based on traditional Sephardic songs from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Guests on the song "La Yave de España" are Miroslav Tadić - guitar, Yvette Holzwarth - violin.
The opening prayer for the song "La Bendision de Madre" was recorded in collaboration with legendary sound engineer Walter Quintus and American percussionist Mark Nauseef in 2016. Mark Nauseef used Japanese temple bells for this occasion.
Audio production is by Merima Ključo, except for the song La Yave de Spanja, for which the mix and master was done by Miroslav Tadić. The visual identity of the album was also created by Merima Ključo using an illustration from the Sarajevo Haggadah.
"Flory Jagoda was the embodiment of Sephardic music, its good spirit and conscientious guardian. She collected and notated Sephardic songs, composed new melodies and wrote lyrics that reflected her upbringing, family life in Bosnia, Sephardic traditions and customs. Until the end of her life, she performed Sephardic music, leaving behind an enviable body of work and a rich legacy. Florica's relationship with Sephardic music and tradition, her love and dedication inspired us to dedicate the album "La Convivencia" in her honor, taking responsibility for preserving this priceless and beautiful tradition." Two celebrated instrumentalists ruminate on their common roots and shared loves of traditional Balkan and classical musics with original works and arrangements of Erik Satie, Manuel de Falla, and the mournful music of sevdah—sometimes called 'Bosnian blues'.
